In Conversation with Helena Frost

Helena Frost has shot six features, eleven shorts, and one extremely patient documentary about lichen.

Every piece on Lumen is built from a single, unbroken question. This one started as a postcard from a friend: "If you could film anywhere next month, where would you go?" The answer, as it turned out, was already on the wall above her desk — a tide chart, marked up in pencil, for a place we hadn't known was real.

We left with two suitcases, a camera we'd borrowed, and a list of names. Three weeks later we came back with eleven hours of footage, forty-two cups of tea, and the rough shape of what you're watching now.

"The trick is to keep shooting after the story seems to have ended. That's usually where the story actually begins."
