Made with Kleap

About

A small journal about moving images, and the people who make them.

Lumen began in 2021 as a place to put the things we kept making for each other: short films shot on quiet afternoons, interviews recorded over bad coffee, essays we wrote to figure out what we thought about a piece we'd just seen.

We're a team of five β€” three filmmakers, a writer, and an editor who insists on a real lunch break. We publish roughly twice a month, never on a schedule you can predict, always on something we'd want to read ourselves.

We don't chase trends or write to an algorithm. We make work for people who still believe that a five-minute film can change the weather of a morning, and that a good question, asked patiently, is worth more than a thousand hot takes.

How we work

Independent
We take no advertising and no sponsored content. The work is supported by readers, and that's the only thing that pays for it.
Slow
We publish when the work is ready. If that means a quiet month, we'd rather be quiet.
Open
Every essay has a comments section. We answer most of them, eventually.
