About
A small journal about moving images, and the people who make them.
Lumen began in 2021 as a place to put the things we kept making for each other: short films shot on quiet afternoons, interviews recorded over bad coffee, essays we wrote to figure out what we thought about a piece we'd just seen.
We're a team of five β three filmmakers, a writer, and an editor who insists on a real lunch break. We publish roughly twice a month, never on a schedule you can predict, always on something we'd want to read ourselves.
We don't chase trends or write to an algorithm. We make work for people who still believe that a five-minute film can change the weather of a morning, and that a good question, asked patiently, is worth more than a thousand hot takes.

How we work
- Independent
- We take no advertising and no sponsored content. The work is supported by readers, and that's the only thing that pays for it.
- Slow
- We publish when the work is ready. If that means a quiet month, we'd rather be quiet.
- Open
- Every essay has a comments section. We answer most of them, eventually.
